Performance Reviews

Updated August 4, 2026

Marmend's review tools let you run structured performance reviews and 1:1s across your team. You build reusable templates, launch review events, collect assessments from reviewers, and read the results — all in one place.

What You Can Do

  • Create reusable review templates with custom evaluation metrics
  • Launch review events and assign who reviews whom
  • Fill in assessments as a reviewer
  • View and interpret review results

Reviews Home

The Reviews start page (**/company/reviews**, labeled Reviews & 1:1) is the hub. From here you can open:

  • Review events — Run and track ongoing reviews.
  • Review templates — Build the reusable forms used by review events (available to Owners, Admins, Managers, and HR).
  • Access settings — Manage who can use the review tools.

Review Templates

A template defines what you ask in a review — the set of evaluation metrics — and who fills it in. Templates are managed on the Review templates page (/company/review-templates), available to Owners, Admins, Managers, and HR.

Template Types

Every template has a type that determines who completes it:

  • Manager review — A manager assesses their reports.
  • Self-assessment — Employees assess themselves.
  • Peer to peer review — Colleagues assess each other.

Creating a Template

  1. From the Review templates page, choose to create a new template (this opens /company/review-create-template).
  2. Enter a name for the template.
  3. Pick the type (Manager review, Self-assessment, or Peer to peer review).
  4. Add metrics — the criteria reviewers will score. Each metric has a name and a short description, and uses one of these answer formats:
    • Rating — A score on a scale.
    • Linear — A sliding scale.
    • Checkbox — A yes/no or checklist response.
    • Text — A free-text written answer.
  5. You can create new metrics on the fly, and reuse existing ones across templates.
  6. Save the template. You can also mark a template as the default for its type.

Tip: Build your metrics carefully — they're reused across every review event based on the template, so consistent wording makes results easier to compare over time.

Review Events

A review event is an actual review cycle: a template put to work for specific people, with a deadline. Events are managed on the Review events page (/company/review-events).

The page groups events by status into tabs:

  • Planned — Created and ready, not yet started.
  • In progress — Underway; reviewers are filling in their assessments.
  • Completed — Finished.

Creating a Review Event

  1. From the Review events page, create a new event (this opens /company/review-create-event). This is available to Owners, Admins, Managers, and HR.
  2. Choose a template — Select the review template to base the event on. You can create a template here if you need one.
  3. Set a deadline — The date by which assessments should be completed.
  4. Assign reviewees — The people being reviewed.
  5. Assign reviewers — The people who will complete the assessments.

Marmend checks your selections for you — for example, a reviewer can't be assigned to review themselves, and peer-to-peer events need enough participants. Once created, reviewers are notified that they have a review to complete.

Filling In an Assessment

When you're assigned as a reviewer, you complete your assessment from the review event (the assessment page at /company/review-event/assessment/...). To get there, open the review event and start your assigned assessment.

  • Answer each metric using the format it was set up with (rating, linear scale, checkbox, or text).
  • For reviews covering several people, you can switch between an Individual view (one person at a time) and a Table view (scoring everyone in a grid). You can edit ratings directly in the table view.
  • A progress indicator shows how many of your assignments are complete.
  • Use Save draft to save your work and return later.
  • Use Submit reviews when you're finished. Submitted reviews are final.

Note: Self-assessment reviews are always completed one person at a time and don't offer the table view.

Viewing Results

Once reviews are submitted, results are available on the Review event results page (/company/review-event/results/...). Open a completed (or in-progress) event to:

  • See each metric's responses and scores
  • Review individual assessments in detail
  • Track completion — who has finished and who is still pending

This gives managers and HR a clear, structured picture of performance to discuss in follow-up conversations.
